“…The red varieties cultivated on the estate are Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, while the white are Malagousia and Assyrtiko.”
The “Hatzidakis Winery” lies on Leros, in the area of Smalou near the sanctuary of Artemis, a place of outstanding natural beauty, and covers 12 stremmata (≈1.2 ha).
The vineyard is planted in rows with trellising, at 1.80 m × 1.30 m spacing. It is encircled by hillsides rich in aromatic herbs, thyme, oregano, sage and savoury, among others, lending our wines a distinctive flavour and bouquet.
The pristine environment, the sea meltemi breeze and the abundant sunshine of the Leros sky, combined with the dedication of winemaker Giorgos Chatzidakis, underpin the excellent quality of the wines of “Hatzidakis Winery”.
The red varieties grown on the estate are Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, while the white are Malagousia and Assyrtiko. Our vineyard totals twelve (12) stremmata and is divided into two sloping parcels.
One, with north-westerly exposure, is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon (2.5 stremmata). The other, facing south, is planted to Merlot (2.5 stremmata). In the southern section we have also been cultivating Malagousia–Assyrtiko for the past two years over an area of 3 stremmata.
In addition, a new six-stremma plot has been added to the east of the existing estate, which will be prepared and planted with the two white varieties mentioned above.
These renowned, high-quality varieties yield wines of outstanding character, with rare nuances little known in mainland Greece. They are something genuinely different, thanks to the sun, the clean air and the aromatic herbs surrounding the vines (thyme, oregano, savoury, etc.). The alleys between our vineyard rows are planted with roses.
